Why default to a different date rather than today?

When I use this program, which is pretty well daily, I need to see where the sun is today or within a week of the current date. There must be a reason that the program defaults to an August date but for my workflow, it is just one extra step and if I happen to forget to reset the date, it can have a major impact on my scheduling based on the sun position.
